The yoga...

The System

Ashtanga Yoga is the system taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.

This method involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures - a process producing intense internal heat and profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies the muscles and cleansing organs, improved blood circulation, calm mind and built strong physique.

The Lineage

Ashtanga Yoga is understood as an original set of postures designed by Patanjali, the sage who had initiated yoga over 300 years ago. Krishnamacharya, a leading Yogi, revived the practice 60 years ago when he discovered the ancient yoga texts in a Calcutta library.

Yoga is designed as an overall fitness program, resulting in optimum physique, increased levels of concentration and powerful flow of energy. However, its benefits extend beyond the physical aspects. It challenges and will eventually perfect the Eight Spiritual Practices or the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Ashtanga is the Sanskrit for eight limbs. Yama- Abstinence, Niyama- Observance, Asana- Postures, Pranayama- Breath Control, Pratyahara- withdrawal of the mind, Dharana- Concentration, Dyhana- Contemplation, Samadhi- Indentification.

The Practice

Ashtanga Yoga will progressively lead the practitioners to realize their fullest potential in all levels of human consciousness; physical, psychological and spiritual when it is practised in its proper sequential order.

One's senses and self-awareness can be controlled and further deepened through the practice of the correct breathing techniques and postures. With consistent and regulated practice, one acquires the steadiness of body and focus of the mind.

There are six series in the Ashtanga system - the Primary Series detoxifies and aligns the body and the Intermediate Series purifies the nervous system by opening and clearing the energy channels. The Advanced Series, A, B, C and D integrate the strength and grace of the practice that will require higher levels of flexibility and humility. Each posture in the time- tested sequence is a preparation for the next, developing the strength and the balance that is essential for a practitioner to progress. Each level is to be fully developed before proceeding to the next.

Many practitioners of Ashtanga Yoga found the Primary Series to be an invaluable tool to assist them in their healing process, whether it is mental or physical. As with any healing process determination and patience is needed.

Yoga is not only a life long practice; it is also a philosophy of life which has the potential to create a healthy body and vibrant mind. Allow time for to mature and the fruits will present themselves.

Om. I honor the lotus feet of the Gurus(our yoga practice) which awaken and manifest joy in one-self, beyond comparison(non-competition), seeking refuge under the physician(our god), which eliminate the poisonous delusion of Samsara(cycle of birth & death).

In the form of a man up to the shoulders, holding a conch(divine sound), discus(wheel of time) and sword(discrimination), thousand-headed, white, I bow respectfully to Patanjali(father of yoga). Om
